A cataract is a common eye-related condition that affects 80% of people, especially in the later stages of life. Our optometrists can diagnose and treat cataracts as well as provide care for pre/post-cataract surgery.

Cataracts

Cataracts are an eye disease that affects the lens of the eye causing it to become cloudy or opaque. This condition can be caused by exposure from ultraviolet (UV) light, eye trauma, hereditary (existing family history), and the use of steroid medication. It can happen at any age but is most common in seniors.

Symptoms

Typically, cataracts develop at a gradual rate making it difficult to notice any immediate changes to your vision. A comprehensive eye exam with dilation will be able to identify any signs of cataracts developing in your lens. Some symptoms may include:

  • +Blurred vision
  • +Double vision
  • +Difficulty seeing at night
  • +Eye sensitivity
  • +Issues with glare and harsh light

Treatment

In most cases, cataracts are fairly simple to manage. Usually, all it takes is changing your glasses, consistently wearing a good pair of sunglasses, and better lighting when you’re reading.

However, for severe cases, surgery may be required to remove cataracts. Typically, cataracts do not harm the eyes so this would only apply for patients who can no longer perform day-to-day activities.

Cataract surgery entails removing the lens from the eye and replacing it with a new artificial lens that is specifically made for each patient. Cataract surgery is a common procedure and is safe with little to no implications.
