Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when there is not enough moisture to lubricate the surface of the eye. Multiple factors such as age, location, tear composition, and specific lifestyle activities can be attributed to dry eyes. In a place like Calgary, AB where it's generally dry and the humidity is low, Dry Eye Syndrome is quite common.

Symptoms

  • +Itchy Eyes
  • +Watery Eyes
  • +Stinging or burning sensation
  • +Blurry vision
  • +Red Eyes

If you are experiencing the persistence of any of these symptoms you can book a consultation with one of our optometrists for more information.

Causes

  • Dry eyes can be attributed but not limited to one of the following:

  • Tear Deficiency -

This happens when your tear glands do not produce enough tears to lubricate the eye. This can also be caused by a lack of blinking or incomplete blinks which can develop dry spots on the eyes surface.

  • Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD)

This disease can cause a reduction of lipids (oils) in the tear film. When this happens, the tear film becomes unstable and can evaporate between blinks. This can lead to symptoms of dry eyes or even inflammation.

Treatments

There are a variety of treatment options for dry eyes and are often used in combination to alleviate dryness. Eye drops are commonly used as a temporary relief to dry eyes.

Our Eye Care Professionals may also recommend other alternatives such as prescription eye drops or a steroid for instant short term relief.

Other forms of treatment may also include changing your environment and/or protecting your eyes from the causes of dryness. Adding a humidifier indoors will add extra moisture to your environment and prevent dryness. Wearing sunglasses, specifically wrapped sunglasses, that cover your eyes well can shelter it from elements like wind, dust, and other airborne particles.
